Daniel Radcliffe plays a flatulent corpse whose entire body can be used in a myriad of ways, such as buzz saw, flamethrower, motor boat and his boner is a compass. Sold! If Kevin Smith's career is built upon dick and fart jokes with a lot of heart then this is the greatest Kevin Smith film he never made. The directors of Tenacious D's comeback music video, Rize of the Fenix, collectively known as the Daniels have delivered a movie only they themselves could ever conceive based upon the hilarity and absurdity alone but also give us an ugly, beautiful and at times depressing look at the human condition as well as a person's demeanor in society. This is a fairytale for the Beavis and Butthead generation and I loved every minute of it.
Paul Danno (There Will Be Blood) plays Hank who is a desperately depressed man on the verge of committing suicide due to his being stuck on a deserted island for so long. Seeing something strange in the beach he postpones his suicide to investigate and finds the corpse of Daniel Radcliffe's Manny. Manny doesn't seem to be alive but he farts uncontrollably, throwing his body all over the place until it revs itself in the water like a motorboat of which Hank decides to use to ride off the island. Unfortunately Hank falls off and sinks into the sea. He awakens on another beach on the edge of a forest and drags Manny inland with him. Hank speaks to Manny constantly as he has not been in contact with another person in ages. To Hanks surprise and horror Manny eventually talks back. Hank has to reteach Manny what it's like to be alive and the ways of life, while Manny utilizes the powers within his body to help Hank survive and find civilization once again.
The biggest problem this film will face is people trying to place what type of film it is. People who cringe at the very concept of this movie as toilet humor will miss out on the beautiful narrative of friendship, love and the childlike perspective of societal standards and taboos. People who want to go see a dumb movie about a farting boner corpse will possibly be bored to tears with constant messages and ideas on humanity. If you go into this film with the idea that those two concepts can be married beautifully this could possibly be your favorite film of the year.
Depression and loneliness plays a huge part in this film. Hank has nothing to look back upon in his life fondly and nothing to look forward to should he survive and make it home. Through teaching the childlike Manny about life and why it matters, Hank truly appreciates what he's been missing and begins to think about how he can maybe improve himself. Manny questioning the taboos are possibly the funniest and best parts of the movie. From the simplistic notion of if everyone farts why is it bad to do it, to if something made you happy once why would you let something bad associated with it ruin it for you? The latter is told in the smuttiest way but asked so innocently that it works on so many levels.
Danno and Radcliffe are one of the best buddy film duos I've ever seen. You will laugh with them, cry with them and when they get any of their many moments of joy together you will smile to see them so happy. The evolution of their friendship and characters throughout the film is so strange and amazing. Both actors are perfect here, especially Radcliffe. He has taken so many strange and different roles since Harry Potter but this one I respect him for the most as he gives 100% commitment to every scene and every strange stunt his body is made to do completely.
Now it's not just 100% tear-jerker moments. You get your dick and fart jokes too. The amount of crazy different ways Manny's body is used is hilarious as well as the dialogue given before and after said stunts are pulled. My personal favorite even though it's a small one was when Hank used Manny's teeth to clip his beard. Then of course you get Hank teaching Manny about sex, masturbation and why he likes girls which leads to the boner compass that points their way home which is just classic.
The Daniels have created a film you will never see again and that will in my heart live as the adult version of E.T. It's straight up whimsy and magical on the level of a potty joke. I really don't know any other way to say it. Between the beautiful cinematography, the hilarious moments of joy mixed with hard R toilet humor and the amazing superpowers seen on the screen it's one of the few films I left the theater saying there is a little magic left in the world. I'm not being sarcastic and I'm dead serious when I say that in a time period where any film that even dares to attempt something this crazy it's all in a character's head, the Daniels said no there is still strange wonderful things in the world and just because they are ridiculous doesn't make them less beautiful. Five out of five farts that could carry this flick to the Oscars!
