Every year it seems now Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg try their best to make a movie more insane then their last comedic debauchery of a film, by not only upping the comedic factor with grotesque and gutter themed humor that their pop culture and historic induced minds can come up with, but also adding a ridiculous look at very taboo and deep seeded problems with society. Where This Is The End took the biblical apocalypse and made us take a look at ourselves as unsavory and the celebrities of the world reveling in a modern day Sodom and Gomorrah, their next venture took the stupidity of blind faith and differences between race, religion and sex and showed us all how fighting over them all is pretty moronic. Those ideas permeate throughout a movie about a talking cartoon Sausage named Frank and his other food friends.
Frank is a Weiner in a pack of hot dogs sitting on a shelf next to a pack of hot dog buns that contains the love of his life, a hot dog bun named Brenda. They along with all the other inhabitants of Shopwell's grocery store all eagerly await the coming of the gods (humans) to take them from their packages and out the doors of the store to the great beyond where they all are lavished and loved by the gods for eternity. However Frank and Brenda are accidentally dropped on the floor out of their packages along with a bunch of other food items and struggle to make it back to their food aisles in hopes of not being left out of the beyond. Some blindly go back to their aisles hoping the gods will return to claim them while Frank learns the truth that they are food for the gods and struggles to understand their purpose as well as trying to figure out a way to introduce this radical idea to the rest of the food in the grocery store that the promise of the beyond is a lie the rest of the food refuse to deny.
This is a goofy, racial stereotyping, crude, referential movie that obviously has a lot of poignancy to it. The idea of questioning these gods is absurd to the food who would all rather live in ignorant bliss until it is too late to save themselves. Why are they there, what is their purpose and this all brings us to a very harsh reality of a scene where Frank asks Brenda why she blindly follows and she asks back why he is so ready to believe fact. It's science vs religion with a lot of the film leaning toward science, which is funny considering how biblical This Is The End was. With the lie of the gods and the great beyond spawns different sects of this faith in the store as each food item changes the story of what's right and wrong due to their character traits, very much the idea of whomever holds the pen writes their own story of God. This is where some of the food items become racial stereotypes but it's not used as a way to bash anyone as much as it shows how different races seem to fight over such small subtleties in religion or appearance. Granted it's done ridiculously such as the sauerkraut are basically the Nazis and they hate the Juices (Jews) or the fact that the Crackers took over the aisle that the Grits used to have but it's so genius in that no one is safe, everybody is satirized by some type of food and you can't help but laugh by how ballsy it is to do that as well as how meaningful it is. This is going to piss a lot of people off as it pretty much takes everything PC and just gives it a big meaty sausagey middle finger but damn does it pack a punch to it that you just don't get anymore.
This movie is funny as hell and does not care who it offends or how off the rails it goes. It carries the tradition of animators wanting to make adult content on the same level as Ivan Reitman's Heavy Metal from back in the 80s. Other than the humans our hero food also has an antagonist who is a broken douchebag. You read that right. He sounds like a Jersey Shore jerk and because he is busted and leaking he starts drinking the fluids out of other characters such as juice boxes and liquor bottles to roid himself up through Juicing. There is a talking douchebag with roided out arms that chases a Weiner voiced by Seth Rogen and a bun voiced by Kristen Wigg. We also get several of the greatest cultural in joke references to Saving Private Ryan, Terminator and Meatloaf ever committed to the screen. This insanity culminates into one of the greatest onscreen battles ever that probably is more enjoyable than half of the big budget action movies you will see this summer with archers, decapitations, exploding heads and at one point something akin to a mechanized Kaiju battle. The two endings after the battle are awkward, hilarious descents into madness that you probably never in a million years will see coming out of this film. If my descriptions couldn't get any weirder, Edward Norton basically calls his parents morons at the end of the movie. You will not be prepared and it will stick with you forever.
This movie is an experience that comes once in a blue moon that takes all of our cultural insecurities and throws them on the screen in ways that would make any PC police squirm for mercy and die of laughter. I really do think this is a partial reaction to how the world reacted to Seth Rogen's The Interview and he and Goldberg cleverly snuck in everything they wanted to say about the state of the world into a basic dick and fart joke movie that mixes with their wanton desire to spoof everything Pixar. For god's sake the directors of this movie have spent most of their lives directing Thomas the Tank Engine and they've delivered all that pent up adult humor and rage into one raging sex joke that ends the movie with the hugest of bangs. Five fresh weenies out of five for the most jacked up thought provoking and disgustingly funny original film you will see this year.
